Cold water injection near the magmatic heat source can enhance production from high-enthalpy geothermal fields

Although existing deep geothermal wells have confirmed that shallow magmatic intrusions heat circulating hydrothermal fluids to supercritical temperatures, successfully utilizing such for power generation has proven challenging. As an alternative, using drilled into the vicinity of injection rather than production potential enhance extraction from intrusion, while simultaneously providing fluid pressure support overlying system. However, dynamic response source and system not previously been investigated numerical modelling. Here, we present models showing in near-vicinity a increases shallower wells. By locally cooling hot rock near permeability rate transfer across brittle–ductile transition. The injected ascend upflow zones above provide wells, without significantly affecting temperature enthalpy produced fluids. We investigate variety scenarios involving only single injector producer. Our suggest could increase by up 10 percent after 30 years well operation 20 theoretical 100 years, with magnitude impact increasing continued over longer timescales.
